As independent retailers look to their EPOS systems for greater security, integrated EFT is an increasingly high priority. Touchretail have many years experience in EFT integration, and offer a full installation, documentation and support package to make it easy for independent retailers to upgrade to this important EPOS technology. Below are the most frequently asked questions about integrated EFT, and our answers.
What are the advantages of Integrated EFT?
If you are happy with your standalone card payment device you might wonder why bother moving to an integrated solution. Here are the main advantages that our clients find most appealing:
- no more cashier keying errors – the transaction amount is sent electronically from the till to the PED (PIN entry device)
- fast transaction time – the time to authorise the card payment is typically under 2 seconds
- seamless transaction flow – Touchretail POS software prompts for PIN entry, PIN accepted, payment status and removal of card, so the cashier can prompt the customer if necessary. Because the transaction does not finalise until the card is removed from the reader, the customer cannot leave their card behind.
- reduced phone line cost – most standalone devices require a dedicated telephone line, but integrated EFT shares the same broadband line as the EPOS terminal (and usually the store)
- instant visibility of all card transactions using powerful WebCom reporting
- high security – Touchretail integrated EFT solution uses the most advanced terminals with highest levels of data encryption for maximum security
- PCI-DSS compliance – the integrated EFT terminal encrypts the card and payment data from point of PIN entry to point of payment processing, removing any retailer card data responsibility
How do I upgrade to Integrated EFT?
If you have decided that now is the time to upgrade to integrated EFT in your business, here is a simple checklist to help you to plan the installation:
- check on the cancellation policy of your existing standalone terminal(s)
- check with Touchretail on current lead times – these vary between 4 weeks and 6 weeks normally, though pre-Christmas can take a bit longer
- check that your EPOS hardware has an RS232 port available for connection of the PED
- ask Touchretail to arrange the paperwork, which requires your bank details, merchant number and store details for processing by your bank and by the EFT software provider
- when the checks have been made and paperwork processed, the new payment account will be created, which will normally include a new merchant number
- Touchretail will despatch the ready configured new PED terminal – currently VeriFone Vx810 terminals are supplied as standard
- when ready to go live Touchretail will configure the terminal online after you’ve connected it to your EPOS hardware
- normally you won’t require a site visit to minimise costs – full and clear instructions are supplied with the integrated EFT software and hardware
Will it cost me any more than my standalone card payment terminal?
Normally the answer is definitely no. Standalone terminals usually cost between £14 and £20 per month, plus you may have to pay for a dedicated telephone line. The current price of the Sentinel integrated EFT terminal is £17 per month, which includes terminal rental, managed card payment service and WebCom reporting and administration software. The terminal uses the same broadband line as your EPOS till, so this can be a significant saving for many retailers.
Once the card payment has been authorised and processed to your acquiring bank, there is no difference in charges as these are still negotiated (if you’re lucky!) between you and your bank.
