Year-on-Year Online Sales Growth November & December 2010

Year-on-Year Online Sales Growth November & December 2010

Taking November and December total ecommerce sales together, the figures for 2010 show an increase of over 30% on the same two months in December 2009, states the eTracker 100 report published by MetaPack. This compares very favourably to instore sales for the same period, which by latest reports seem to have been only marginally higher in 2010 than 2009.

Large fluctuation

November online sales showed a 38% increase, while the final result for December was a more modest 26% increase – but still impressive bearing in mind the snow and ice that played havoc with pre-Christmas shopping. And although ahead of previous predictions – see blog post Mega Monday Exceeds Expectations – December online trade fluctuated week by week dramatically. (more…)

Cyber-war Affects Independent Retailers At Crucial Time

Monday, December 13th, 2010

WikiLeaks logoIn what has become termed as the world’s first cyber-war, the sales revenue of many innocent independent retailers has been curtailed at the most crucial time of the year. It is common knowledge that computer hackers supporting the WikiLeaks website (‘Hacktivists’) have targeted service providers that have terminated contracts with WikiLeaks. Monday 6th December saw Paypal services unavailable for about 4 hours, followed by Mastercard on Tuesday 7th December. Both of these instances have been attributed to Hacktivists supporting Wikileaks.

Mega Monday Exceeds Expectations

Friday, December 10th, 2010

Mega Monday graphicMonday 6th December has been confirmed as the busiest online shopping day of the year (Mega Monday) with business exceeding expectations at £291m for the day, according to Retail Decisions (the online payment processing specialist). The busiest time was 1.15pm, with sales peaking at an incredible £831,000 per minute.

Busiest online trading day

Readers will note from my previous blog on this subject Christmas sales… that November 29th was originally tipped as being the busiest online trading day, but comments and anecdotal evidence from many Touchretail independent retailers disagreed with this – most said that their sales peaked a week later, or even after that. This was borne out by latest Retail Decisions figures, who say that online sales on 6th December were 2% higher than the previous Monday. How things can change in a week or so.

Online trading up 21%

Online Sales December year by year

Another change in the last week has been more down to the icy cold weather and snow-laden roads and pavements. While High Street shopping has seen a dip, customers have voted with their mice and shopped more online – last Monday’s online sales were 21% up on the 2009 equivalent day. But with cold weather set to continue for a while, will we see another record day of online trading on Monday 13th December?

Website design

After around 10 years of website design and development for many retailers, it is now recognised that some design features work better than others. While it has cost the major players large amounts of investment to find out what works and what does not, many independent retailers are now making use of the salient points that are accepted as ‘best practice’.
