What is Black Friday?

Black Friday - the day after thanksgiving

Black Friday is one of the busiest times of the year for retailers. To the best of my knowledge, it originated as the day after thanksgiving because that is the start of the holiday season. The main reason for its name is because of the reduction of red ink and gains in black ink, under this theory, it is the beginning of the period when retailers would no longer have losses (the red) and instead take in the year's profits (the black).

The busiest shopping day of the year in the US is Black Friday

Black Friday has routinely been the busiest shopping day of the year in the united states since 2005. Crowds of shoppers rush to retail stores as soon as they open to take advantage of the special Black Friday sales and discounts. With most major retailers open very early, even as early as overnight to offer promotional sales.

Black Friday is an unofficial US holiday

Although it is not an official holiday, many US non retail employees and schools have both thanksgiving and the following friday off, this will then increase the number of potential shoppers. Even e-commerce sites have begun offering discounts and free shipping on Black Friday.

Black Friday deals are already available now

Historically most advertisements for Black Friday are published the day before Black Friday (thanksgiving). However, Black Friday deals are already available now, days before actual Black Friday.
